Pakokku is situated on the west bank o the Ayeyarwaddy River in Magwe Division. It is located between 94˚ 41' and 95˚ 10' of east longitude and between 20˚ 15' and 21˚ 31' of north latitude. The altitude of the town is 211.69 feet above sea level. The region of the town covers a total area of about 3.04 square miles. Located to the north-east of Pakokku is Yaesakyo Township and to the north-west, Myaing Township. Pakokku is composed of 15 puarters and has a population of about 80000.

Pakokku lies in the central Myanmar and is a port on the Ayeyarwaddy River. It is also a trading and shipping centre; agricultural products include sesame, peanuts, beans and peas, cotton and rice, etc.
It is traditionally said that one of the queens of King Alaungsithu who was pregnant was killed by the king. The baby boy was taken out of his dead mother’s womb and buried in a cave near a fishing village which is now near the site of the Shwegu Pagoda.
The name Pakokku itself is said to gave undergone many changes of name throughout the ages, from Tharhtoke Ku to Thahtoke Ku and finally to Pakokku.
It is famous for its many ancient pagodas and a-nyar products. The city is also an important Buddhist ce4ntre, with more than 80 monasteries. The locals are very friendly and devout.
Pakokku is indeed a historic city in which Myanmars can still take pride.

In Pakokku area, visitors can find old wooden monasteries which have been used as Buddhist study centers in the time of old Myanmar kings. One of them is Pakhangyi monastery in Pakhankyi town located on the western bank of the confluence point of the Ayeyarwaddy and Chindwin.
